I've thought about using the audible book service. Just wanted to know if others have used it and what your thoughts are. Is it accessible? Also if I understand it right you pay 14 dollars a month and get 2 credits for free books otherwise you buy every book you want for 7 dollars or more. Is this correct? Thanks.

If you have a portable device, then yes its worth it. I use my IPhone, so I can listen to books wherever I want.
The pricing is a little off in your post though. The fourteen dollar one only has one credit a month, its the gold package I believe. The oe above that, which is what I have, is two credits for twenty dollars, but its a good deal if you rea a lot of modern books. The books you buy without credits vary in price. I've bought books s heap as two dollars before, or as much as fourty. You do get a largediscount on them for being a member though.
Its a good program, and the book selection is growing all the time.

Yep, I'll second what SL said.
I like being able to find audio books that NLS doesn't yet have. The prices are very reasonable too.
If you don't have a portable device, you can also burn your books to cd's. I've never done this because I use my Iphone to listen to books but it is an option.

I have been an audible member for two years, and love it! Their customer service is great, and their selection is fantastic!

sounds cool I'll have to check it out then. It would be cool to listen to books on my iPhone. Does anyone know if it's possible to listen to nls books on the iPhone? I didn't think so but thought I'd ask anyway.

I've heard rumblings this year there will be an NLS app for the iPhone. Don't know when, though.

Audible does indeed have a fabulous selection, and unlike Itunes and other services, I don't beleive people in Canada get shafted. One thing to remember though is, if you go for the $14 plan, they up the price after three months.

No they don't, TBG. the price is $14.95 or $22.95/month so long as you are on it. What they do sometimes do is give you a rate of $7.49 for the first three months, then up the fees to $14.95 for one credit per month, which is still a screaming good deal.

There are some books that, for whatever reason, are not available in Canada, but that number seems to be comparatively small.

Sorry MusicianSorry all. That's true. it was 7.99 to 14. Considering how expensive buying audiobooks used to be back in the day, plus the literary abomination that is abridgement - which any company should be ashamed of - it's a pretty good deal.

I have tried it but found that bookshare.org and the NLS book site have the same books so I don't spend the money for Audible now.

I guess it depends how picky you are about narration. I enjoy most of the audible narrators... and I like the fact that if you do not like a book you can return it.

Oh that's great. That's a new thing. You used to just get the book and have to keep it no matter what.

They started it about a year ago. There are obvious restrictions, but I have never had a problem.

I like that you can actually keep the book even if you're no longer a member. So many programs require you to keep the membership, or lose the content. A better website might be nice, but it looks like Audible is working on a more accessible site for people with screen readers.
